ABOUT US

Image Insight, Inc. (I3) is a Connecticut-based small business specializing in advanced image analytics. Our mission is simple yet vital - To protect people and places. We develop advanced, affordable technologies for detecting and preventing radiation threats — from accidents and theft to acts of radiological terrorism.

Our patented core products — GammaPix™ and LookOut™ — redefine how cameras perceive the world. Trusted by first responders, federal, state, and local governments, and enterprise integrators, GammaPix turns unmodified mobile devices and CCTV cameras into radiation detectors.

LookOut™ transforms security cameras into smart sensors that detect nighttime drone activity and other aerial and maritime threats. LookOut strengthens public safety and helps secure critical infrastructure.

Our team has been awarded more than 100 contracts and task orders from leading U.S. agencies including the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security. GammaPix has been extensively tested by national laboratories in the U.S. and internationally, confirming its reliability and performance in real-world scenarios. Image Insight and GammaPix have twice gone through the Department of Homeland Security SAFETY Act process and received designation as a Qualified Anti-Terrorism Technology (QATT) .

Our innovations have been recognized with numerous awards, including:

  • R&D 100 Award for Top Technology (2012)

  • Most Innovative Product or Service at the Innovation in Resilience conference, UK (2012)

  • Tech Company to Watch, CT Innovation Summit (2013)

Current U.S. DoD IDIQ contract vehicles:

  • JE-RDAP (counter-WMD efforts)

  • AFLCMC/XA (Air Force software development and modeling and simulation efforts)

  • Missile Defense Agency - (support to Golden Dome comprehensive missile defense systems)

How Our Technologies Enhance Your Safety

OUR PRODUCTS

GammaPix ionizing radiation detection (TRL 9)

Image Insight developed the GammaPix™ technology to enable widespread detection of ionizing radiation using unmodified digital cameras. With GammaPix software, Commercial-off-the-Shelf (COTS) cameras with standard CMOS sensors can measure dose rates down to background or as high as 1,000 rad/hr in minutes or seconds.

Versions of our software have been specially designed for EOD robots, mobile devices, cargo and check-point inspection, security cameras, and special applications. A wide range of operational data exists that demonstrate the ability of GammaPix to detect and track real world radiological events and activity. Example data analysis products are available upon request.

Applications include:

  • Border monitoring

  • Force protection & base defense

  • Radiological situational awareness during operations in contaminated zones

  • Rad/nuke intelligence

  • Routine radiological monitoring

  • Space radiation and nuclear weapon effects monitoring and assessment

  • Additional medical and radon applications are under development

Benefits Compared to Current Solutions:

  • Mission impact: COTS cameras are everywhere, so radiation data can be available anywhere, anytime. Border regions are vast, and often incompletely monitored since most dedicated detectors are too expensive and too fragile to survive in the field. Many rugged CCTV cameras and smartphones are routinely deployed and can contribute to personnel safety and intelligence collection throughout the extended border region.

  • Cost & Availability: GammaPix uses unmodified COTS devices such as smartphones, tablets, and CCTV security cameras, which reduces hardware cost and alleviates supply chain constraints. COTS equipment can be easily and quickly replaced.

Integration Pathways, Validation, Training:

  • GammaPix applications feed data to the GammaPix Command Center, or optionally ATAK, JWARN, COT servers, COPERS, Nett Warrior devices, and other Common Operating Picture (COP) products.

  • Under an Air Force Air Combat Command A29-sponsored project, this capability was incorporated into an NSA ATO (DARKWING/SIGNUS), and we are credentialed to process data in GovCloud.

  • Image Insight and GammaPix have twice gone through the Department of Homeland Security SAFETY Act process and received designation as a Qualified Anti-Terrorism Technology (QATT) Qualified Anti-Terrorism Technology (QATT).

  • Our integrated live-virtual reality training simulator enables personnel to train in their local areas against virtual threats in a real-world scenario. These training sessions have been successfully employed by military, police, and other frontline responders to train against complex threats, and across substantial land areas.

LookOut™ UAS detection & tracking (TRL 5/6)

Image Insight is also developing a new, state-of-the-art, low-cost, video analysis capability, called LookOut™, to detect and track light and LiDAR emitters such as commercial and military UAS and other optical/infrared (OIR) transients like satellites, airplanes, artillery shells and rockets in flight, laser target designators and rangefinders. LookOut augments current counter-UAS (c-UAS) and counter-sniper systems used by militaries across the world, and by special police units in high-risk urban areas. It will help protect vulnerable military bases and troop formations, ships, public sites such as sports venues and pedestrian gathering areas, and critical infrastructure. LookOut is intended to be integrated into comprehensive c-UAS and Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance (ISR) systems to augment nighttime detection and tracking capabilities against a wide range of threats, including boats conducting nighttime operations. Since it uses unmodified cameras as the data feed, it is especially useful for wide area and denied area coverage.

Under an AFWERX SBIR Phase 2 contract, LookOut (then called “LaUDS”) was evaluated as part of an AFRL/DO run Operational Test at the Stockbridge UAS Test Facility, run by the Rome, NY AFRL lab in April 2023. Using Government Owned/Government Operated DJI drones, the Department of Air Force pilots performed about 150 different flight profiles. All were detected, and using a 1st generation tracking module, LookOut held track about 80% of the time. Accessing remote cameras, we have used LookOut to track a wide variety of threats in the Ukrainian theater of operations, including missile and artillery combat. LookOut also successfully tracks space vehicles from the ground using unmodified CCTV security cameras.

In September 2025, LookOut was featured in a weeklong U.S. Border Patrol and INTERPOL exercise on the U.S. southern border. LookOut used a combination of PTZ and super-wide angle (fisheye) lens cameras to provide all-sky coverage during day and night operation. It successfully tracked multiple, aggressively maneuvering UAS and maritime activity.

Applications Include:

  • Border Security

  • Prison Contraband Prevention

  • Counter-UAS Early Warning and Targeting

  • Space Domain Awareness

  • Force protection & base defense

  • Remote situational awareness using cameras in distant or denied areas

  • Automatic and autonomous intelligence and surveillance

  • Routine monitoring of airspace (UAS, artillery, missiles) and maritime environment (vessels and personnel using lights or IR illuminators)

  • Automated missile launch detection or tracking

At Image Insight, we continue to advance our mission — delivering innovative, proven technologies that make the world safer.
